Max Factor Second Skin Foundation

Recently I have been trying to decrease my makeup collection and use up many of the products I have purchased, yet I am always keen to try new things and experiment. So instead of buying a whole bottle of a new foundation that I really didn't need I collected a couple of samples of MaxFactor's Second Skin foundation to test out. Blogging on a budget ;).

After going through 5 satches (for me it's about 2 applications per sample) I have to say I am impressed, which is not often the case with drugstore foundations. This foundation is lovely for every day wear. It gives a medium coverage, but is buildable without getting cakey. It has quite a light consistency and blends into the skin beautifully with minimal effort. In some ways it reminds me of Make Up Forever HD foundation, which you all know is my favourite, as it looks very natural on the skin and almost undetectable if you apply a thin layer. The MUFE HD has a better coverage, but SS is a fraction of the price with an RRP of £13.99. It lasts a decent amount of time too, though I always set my foundation with powder as I develop a very oily T-zone throughout the day.  The only problem I have is that it comes in such a limited range of shades. Only 5 are listed on the website, which I think is very poor, even by drugstore standards.

Unfortunately as my beloved Canon SLR died a mysterious, and hideously expensive to fix, death I was unable to take pictures. However, having now bought a little samsung to tide me over while I diligently save for a new one I decided to try out my last sachet to show you a photo. The only issue was that my last sample was in the colour golden. Yes, the second darkest colour! As you all know I am super pale and to be honest even the creamy ivory was a touch too tan for my ghostly self ;). With a lot of blending, and given that when I brave the freezing outdoors the only part of me visible is the eye to chin area, I was able to get away with it... just.

Yes, yes I too also think of that time when ANTM decided to change their model's ethinicities by painting them different colours. How I wish I was  born with a beautiful olive complexion! Honestly, it is a testament to how good this foundation is that such a vast colour change doesn't look  like a blotchy fake tan.

Have you guys tried this foundation and did you like it?

P.S. I'm sorry I just noticed that the first photo looks strangely airbrushed, even when setting my camera on macro it seems to have blended out my pores (this foundation is good, but not that good). If anyone knows how I can get rid of this it would be of great help. Of course it's nice to look perfectly airbrushed in photos, but for blog purposes it defeats the point a little? What do you guys think?

  1. I've never tried this foundation, but I do love the make up for ever hd foundation so I think I'll be trying this out soon. What are you wearing on your lips if I may ask? The color looks very pretty.

  2. oh SS is my current favourite for sure, its become my favourite go to. It makes me look radiant and natural and ive had some many compliments. im an NC20 and am using cream ivory which is wonderful.. i also have warm almond for the coming summer months (i know, far away!) it does a create job of not clinging to my blemishes and is so easy to blend into the skin. definitely a winner for me!

  3. Most foundations are too dark for me, I wish I could blend darker ones on my face as well as you. You look glowy, I tend to look more muddy. . ! Love the lipstick and whole make up look too

  4. I think this foundation changes its color a bit after you applied it. I got my hand on warm almond, but I am MAC NW15, so it is way too dark for me. When I first applied it, it seemed definitely too dark, but after a couple of minutes, when I looked in the mirror again it seemed to have become lighter and more suitable with my skin tone. Maybe thats the reason they don't have a really wide range of tones or maybe I was imagining things. :D It was a bit too light coverage for me(I have acne scars and at that point a few breakouts), so I combined it with my MAC studio fix fluid and it worked out great. It looked great for a very long time and with the MAC one(I used NW20 at that point) I could also blend out the edges better.

    1. No, it is definitely what you've said. It's the same with me actually. I apply the Golden shade and at first, it seems too light on my skin but a couple of minutes later, as if someone waved a magic wand, my skin looked perfect! Before I go out, I always check my face in good natural lighting and I even went so far as to examine my skin in a magnifying mirror... loved it!

  6. I have this in the shade 'Almond' and it's the best match for me... Well not really because it looks so ashy on me xD. I wore it once and my sister said i looked 'grey' xD. I don't really like this foundation, i think it sort of has a weird smell and the colour of the foundation separates when i get a pump out... Like it's sort of brown with streaks of cream =/. Not sure if that's suppose to happen xD. I also find that this gives me a super oily t-zone which is weird even though i set it with powder. I don't think this foundation is for me xD. I prefer Maybelline tbh =).

    1. It happens to mine when I haven't touched it in a while so I always shake it before pumping... seems to do the trick and when you put it on your face, the smell doesn't really stand out any more...

  11. I was going to purchase second skin but went for colour adapt instead which i'm not really too impressed by. It's not terrible but the coverage isn't that great and it doesn't blend away imperfections as it claims!

I might need to buy the camera you have no pores would be excellent - ha! Mines shows everyone I have! x

  16. it is an ok foundation but i feel it makes the skin look a little dull and grey. the lightest shade isn't light enough.
